Our story

The desert was home before it was a business

Moon Star Desert Camp sits on the Jaisalmer – Sam – Dhanana Road at Sam, near Kanoi. This part of the Thar is where our family is from. Long before there were camps here, there were camels, a village, and a road that went west and did not come back for a while.

The camp started small — a handful of tents and a jeep, taking guests who had been sent by people who had already stayed. That is still where most of our bookings come from, which shapes how we run things. When your business depends on the last guest recommending you to the next one, overselling stops being tempting.

Over the years the rest grew around it: more tents, our own camels rather than hired ones, jeeps, and eventually cars, because guests kept needing picking up from the railway station at six in the morning. Today one family runs all of it, which is why the person who answers your WhatsApp is the person who can actually change something.

What we run ourselves

Nothing here is contracted out

Most camps at Sam buy in at least one part of the evening — the camels, the musicians, the car. We do not, and it changes what we can fix on the day.

The people

Who you will actually meet

✦

Everyone working at the camp is from Sam, Kanoi or the villages nearby. Nobody is brought in for the season and sent home in March.

On the dunes

The camel men

They grew up with these animals and they walk beside your camel the whole way. They also know which dune is empty when three buses pull into the main sunset point.

Dal, sabzi, ker sangri in season, roti off the tawa. The same people set your tent, carry the extra blanket at eleven at night, and light the fire.

How we work

What we promise, and what we will not do

What we promise

  • The camp is where we say it is — on the sand at Sam, not on the approach road
  • The price we quote on WhatsApp is the price you pay, with nothing added later
  • Safari, food and the evening programme are run by our own people
  • If something cannot happen that day, we tell you before you book, not after
  • One number for the whole trip, answered by the family that runs it

What we will not do

  • Publish reviews or star ratings we have not earned
  • Claim awards, rankings or certifications we do not hold
  • Show photographs of a camp that is not ours
  • Advertise a fixed price that changes when you arrive
  • Promise a folk programme on a night when the troupe is not playing

If you ever find any of this is not true of a stay with us, tell us directly on the number at the bottom of this page. It is the fastest way to get it fixed.

Wind-rippled dune belt at Sam Sand Dunes west of Jaisalmer

Why Sam

Where a camp sits decides your evening

Sam is where the dune belt west of Jaisalmer is at its widest and cleanest, about 40 km from the city. A camp on the sand means you walk out of your tent onto a dune. A camp on the approach road means a drive every time you want to see one.

It is the single biggest difference between two camps advertising the same night at the same price, and it is worth checking on a map wherever you end up booking — including with us.

The other thing Sam gives you is dark sky. Forty kilometres from the nearest streetlight, on a clear winter night, you can pick out constellations from the sand outside your tent. That is not something a camp can add later; it either has it or it does not.

Living here

Running a camp in a place people actually live

  • The camels are working animals. They rest through the hottest part of the day, are watered before and after rides, and we cap how many trips one camel does in an evening.
  • Water is carried in. There is no spare of it at Sam, so we ask guests to use it as we do — carefully.
  • The staff are local. Wages from this camp stay in Kanoi and the villages around it rather than leaving with the season.
  • The musicians are paid properly. Manganiyar and Langa performers are professionals, not decoration, and we treat the evening programme as their work.
  • The dunes are not a bin. What comes out to a dune with a guest comes back with them, and we clear the sand around the camp regularly.
  • Villages are not exhibits. If you visit one with us, you visit as a guest, and photographs are asked for rather than taken.

About the camp

Questions people ask before they trust us with a night

Who runs Moon Star Desert Camp?

One family, living at Sam near Kanoi, with staff, camel men and drivers from the villages nearby. There is no head office and no call centre — the number on this site reaches the people who run the camp.

Is the camp really on the sand at Sam Sand Dunes?

Yes, on the Jaisalmer – Sam – Dhanana Road at Sam, near Kanoi village. Put it on a map before you book, with us or with anyone else — several camps advertised as Sam camps sit on the approach road instead.

Do you own the camels and jeeps, or hire them?

They are ours and the camel men's. That is why we can move a safari an hour later when your train is delayed instead of telling you it is not possible.

Why are there no prices on the website?

Because rates in Jaisalmer move sharply between December and June, and a group of two pays differently from a group of eight. A printed price would be either out of date or padded. Send your dates and you get a firm figure in writing.

Why are there no star ratings or awards on the site?

Because we have not been given any that would be honest to display. When we have real Google and TripAdvisor reviews to show, they will appear here with the guest's name and the source, and not before.

Can we visit the camp before booking?

Yes. If you are already in Jaisalmer, come out in the afternoon and have a look at the tents before you decide. Message us first so somebody is there to show you round.

Do you take large groups and corporate bookings?

Yes — a block of tents, a private folk programme and a buffet scaled to the numbers. Give us as much notice as you can for winter dates, which fill early.

What languages do you speak?

Hindi, Rajasthani and enough English to handle bookings, directions and the evening. For a detailed history tour of the fort and havelis we can arrange a licensed guide.

How do we reach you?

WhatsApp is fastest and usually answered within minutes during the day. Call +91 97720 20667 if you would rather talk it through, or use the contact page.
